Bathroom Remodeling Tips: For Starters, Don’t Skimp

Angie’s list is a membership driven service that compiles consumer ratings and reviews of local service companies and contractors in multiple cities across the United States. Along with their reviews, Angie’s list writes web articles for the markets they cover including home remodeling. One of their most recent articles points out the top five most common mistakes that homeowners make when remodeling their bathrooms. Personally, I see two here that unfortunately I have made..Can you say the same? Tell us of any that may be missing from the list.

Budgeting too little

According to Remodeling Magazine, the average cost of remodeling a luxury bathroom is $16,634 but it really depends on the age of your home. The older the home, the more likely you are to find aging pipes, bad plumbing or worse, mold. If you are like me, once I started our bathroom remodel and all the new designs in the marketplace I wanted to upgrade more and more. When budgeting, always add a little more.

Being trendy

Remember when brass was beautiful and chic? So did I. Now I can’t get the shiny stuff out of my house fast enough. Classic lines are always best if you don’t want that cringe of regret that sometimes happens when you follow trendy designs. Some trends are good because they are traditional and will stand the test of time, but there are some trends that are perhaps too bold and will look outdated more quickly than others.

Cheaping out

Don’t skimp, as you will likely wish you hadn’t once your luxury bathroom is complete. Remodeling is a time consuming, dirty job. Do it right the first time so you can look at your finished bathroom with no regrets. Go big or go home or maybe go as close to big as you can without breaking the bank

Ignoring clearance distances

An important part to a bathroom remodel is making a blueprint of the remodel. By doing this on paper with accurate drawings and measurements, you will be able to see if there is enough spacing for doors, shower stalls and custom free standing baths.

Doing it yourself

If you have ever done a room remodel yourself, you know what it entails. Hard work, long hours and more time to re-do the areas where you messed up. Maybe I know this mistake a little too well because we did our own bathroom remodel with a custom bathtub. The project took six months from start to finish..Yes six months living amongst tile saws, dust and debris. Take my advice, hire a contractor. They will do a better job, it will get done MUCH faster and sometimes it is cheaper due to learning curves.
