Swimming pool corrosion in stainless steel vessels is almost always a water chemistry problem. When pH drops below 7.2, the water turns acidic and starts attacking the metal surface. High chlorine concentrations make it worse, especially when tablets or granules come into direct contact with the steel instead of being introduced through the circulation system. Poolside chemicals left sitting on the surface can also initiate pitting, the earliest visible sign of trouble.
How Do You Avoid Pool Corrosion?
Water balance is the place to start. Keep pH between 7.4 and 7.6, and test total alkalinity and calcium hardness regularly. Chlorine tablets should never sit directly on the pool surface; dose through a skimmer or floating dispenser instead. Rinse the vessel after heavy use, wipe down the waterline where residue collects, and brush the walls weekly before buildup has a chance to set.
Does the Grade of Stainless Steel Make a Difference?
